Program Video

I have just finished putting together an informational video regarding our Bioscience Technology program. It should be the complete package for counselors, teachers, students and parents that want to explore a career in Biotechnology. We have over a 90% placement rate into jobs or a bachelor's degree. This is well worth exploring if I do say so myself. The video has active links to internet sites regarding job statistics, curriculum, interviews, etc. The background music is outstanding (half joking here, it is a couple of free downloads entitled "RNA Interference" and "Hela" from a composer that has been "inspired" by the human genome project).

If you are interested in a copy, drop me a line at jdeak@lakelandcc.edu

It is a Quicktime movie around 180 Mb. A bit too large to send efficiently by email. I have burned it to CDs. Include an address and I will drop it off or send in by mail.

Hope all of your school years are coming to a pleasant end.

Regards,

Joe

Workshop Anyone?

Thank you for inquiring about the spring, Barb. I thought I would start a new thread so that my schedule would be "Right there" when others log onto the site.

For those wishing to do a day long workshop this spring, I will be able to schedule something starting during our spring break week.

Specifically, the bioscience lab (and me) will be free on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays beginning Tuesday, March 13 through Friday May 18.

For high school, I typically do a DNA fingerprinting workshop based on the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). However, if you want to develop something else (i.e. restriction analysis, transformation , protein electrophoresis, cell staining, the possibilities are endless) I will certainly work with you.

I can provide all reagents, equipment, and teaching. All you have to do is get them out of school for a day and to Lakeland. As long as we start at a reasonable time (say 9:00), we should be able to get them out in time to be back before the end of the school day for extracurricular activities. I also have a small grant to provide lunch. But, at $5 or $6 dollars a student, I only have enough for 100 students or so. So, get your reservations in early. Otherwise, the students will have to bring a lunch.

It is first come, first served. If your interested contact me at:

jdeak@lakelandcc.edu

See you soon,

Joe

Sequence information

Hello all,

I hope that your holiday season is off to a great start.

I finally got back the sequence information from the PCR samples. Here is the e-mail with instructions for viewing. If you want to know which sample is yours, send me an e-mail at jdeak@lakelandcc.edu and I can reveal your code #. If you just want to play with the data, have at it! I would suggest using thier "sequence server" tool so you can play with some of the informatics tools like alignments.

Happy holidays!

Joe

Joseph Deak,

Your submitted samples have been sequenced! I've placed the sequence
data at the bottom of this email. You can also view your sequence in
the data section of our web site (http://www.dnalc.org/data/mtdna/) by using this url:

http://www.dnalc.org/data/mtdna/examine_sequences.pl?src_ids=2AHVJF1wKcpMm

However, the most useful way to
access sequences is to use our brand-new tool "Sequence Server." To
use this tool, you will need access to the internet and either Netscape
4.0 (or better) or Internet Explorer 4.0 (or better).

The tool is at http://www.bioserver.org/sequences/.

After logging in to Sequence Server, you should click the "Manage Groups"
button at the top of the screen. This will open the Manage Groups window. In
this window, choose "Classes" from the popup menu on the upper-right. A new
screen will appear, and you will be able to see your class's name in the list
presented. To select your class. Click on the checkbox next to your class,
and click the OK button. This will put your class on your worksheet.

To compare sequences, you need to have more than once
sequence on the worksheet. To add a sequence, select the desired sequence
from the popup menu at the bottom of your class. Do this for as many sequences
as you want. Then, click the checkbox for each sequence you wish to
include in a comparison, then click on the "Compare" button. Sequence Server
will open a new window showing the results of your analysis.

To find related sequences in Genbank, click the right radio button for the
sequence you wish to search with, then click on the "Analyze" button. Sequence
Server will open a new window showing the results of your analysis.

You can also use sequence server to examine the sequences in our
database (by clicking the "Manage Groups" button), search GenBank for
any sequence matching a keyword (by clicking the "Search by Keyword"
button), and to type in your own sequences (by clicking the "Create
Sequence" button).

Please contact me if you have any problems.

Sincerely,
Johns, Laura

Thanks

Thanks for setting up this site Rich. I will try to check in often.

If a day or two goes by and I don't weigh in on post directed at me, please prompt me with an e-mail.

Thanks to everyone for making the "Don't Clone Alone" workshop a success.

Here is a link to a great site that catalogs biology animations by category
http://science.nhmccd.edu/biol/bio1int.htm

Sorry if it is a duplicate of a link on Rich's bookmark website.

Never Clone Alone!

Workshop Success

The first Lakeland Biotechnology / PSE/ Lake County ESC intro workshop is history. Twenty area teachers in elementary, middle and high school classrooms joined together to separate, amplify, cut, spool and clone DNA. The results were great and the networking even better. This blog is being created to help the networking component of the workshop. Post your question, your answer or just your thoughts about DNA, biology, science or just teaching. Everyone is invited to add, comment and sometimes just lurk. But remember, a blog is most successful when everyone contributes. So lets network!!!!!
